What is a DevOps Engineer?
What DevOps engineers build and operate, how responsibilities vary between teams, and which questions to ask before accepting a role.

The short definition
A DevOps engineer builds and operates the systems that move software into production. Depending on the team, that can include delivery pipelines, infrastructure as code, monitoring, cloud access and incident response.
AWS describes DevOps as a combination of culture, practices and tools. A job carrying the title covers only part of that work. Developers, security engineers and operations teams still share responsibility for safe delivery.
Read the responsibilities
Compare job descriptions by what you would own: deployment tooling, a runtime platform, cloud architecture or a particular service. System administrators also write automation and manage complex systems; the title alone does not establish a technical boundary.
Ask whether developers can deploy independently and who handles failed releases. A queue of manual deployment requests is a different job from building a self-service delivery platform.
A possible week
You might spend a morning debugging a rollout, review a Terraform change and help another team instrument a service. Treat this as an example, not a measured division of working hours.
Ask the hiring manager for a recent week on the team: planned engineering time, support requests, on-call load and interrupted work. A small team can offer broad ownership, but it still needs backup and a workable escalation path.
Preparation for September 2026 and beyond
Start with the target stack. For Kubernetes roles, practise scheduling and storage failures as well as deployments. For delivery roles, explain artifact provenance, workload identity and rollback. Platform roles need a way to measure whether developers can complete their work successfully.
AI infrastructure adds GPU capacity, model loading and inference reliability when those workloads are in scope. Do not replace Linux, networking or scripting practice with a list of current product names.
Who this career suits
The work rewards patience with incomplete evidence and a willingness to improve systems after an incident. You will need to explain a technical decision to the people affected by it.
Check the on-call arrangement before accepting. Ask about frequency, training, compensation and recovery time after overnight incidents. Some roles carry a pager; others primarily build tooling.
