DevOps vs SRE vs Platform Engineer

Compare DevOps, SRE and platform engineering by ownership, users and reliability responsibilities, then use the actual job description to choose.

Compare accountabilities

Use these as starting points: DevOps work improves delivery and operations; SRE applies engineering to service reliability; platform engineering provides capabilities that other development teams consume. A single team may do all three.

The CNCF platform white paper treats the platform as a product for internal users. Google's SRE material describes error budgets as a way to balance reliability and change. These are operating models, not a guarantee about every job with the title.

Prepare for the work being hired

For a delivery-focused role, rehearse pipeline design, infrastructure changes and recovery from a bad release. For reliability work, practise diagnosis, capacity estimates and SLO decisions.

For a platform role, explain who uses the platform, which task it makes easier and how you would detect abandonment. Support those choices with a technical design and a migration path. Ask the recruiter which of these areas the interview actually covers.

Compare compensation carefully

A title does not establish an engineering level or salary band. Ask whether the role shares a ladder with software engineering, how levels map and what the published range includes.

Compare base pay, bonus, equity and on-call terms separately. This guide has no verified basis for a fixed SRE or on-call percentage premium over another title.

Choose a role you can evaluate

Target platform work if you want to build services for other engineers; target reliability work if you want to own service behavior under failure. Delivery engineering is a good target when release systems and automation are your main interests.

Search across all three titles, then filter by responsibilities. Ask what success after six months would look like and which decisions the role can make without another team's approval.

FAQ

Is SRE just a rebranded DevOps role?

SRE has a documented engineering approach to reliability, including SLOs and error budgets. Teams implement it differently. Ask how reliability targets affect priorities and releases, and who owns that policy.
