Redeploying the old tag reverses code and nothing else. What separates staff-level answers is a per-change map of what rolls back in seconds, what rolls back in days, and what only moves forward.

A registry grows because every commit mints digests nobody pulls again. Reference-aware retention keeps rollback targets and audit chains while expiring the debris.

A freeze enforced by email is a suggestion. Tier services, put the window in deploy tooling, price exceptions honestly, and judge the policy by incidents prevented.

Pipeline credentials are the keys to production and git history is forever. Scoping per stage, runtime-minted short-lived identities, expiry-enforced rotation, and a revoke-first leak playbook.

A token naming the right repository does not prove that the approved deployment workflow ran. Bind the caller, deployment context and called workflow into the cloud trust contract.

Testing is a pipeline design problem in this role, not a QA one. The constraint is the question: you cannot run everything on every commit, so what you choose to defer is the answer.

The security argument for GitOps is more specific than 'Git is the source of truth'. Pull deployment can remove cluster credentials from CI, and that single fact is most of the case.

Most candidates narrate the YAML. The scoring starts underneath: who schedules what, where artifacts live between jobs, and why disposable runners rewrite how you think about caching and trust.

Self-heal did exactly what it was configured to do. The senior answer is not switching it off; it is designing the Git path and the sync order so nobody bypasses the system at 3am again.

One Application declaring others sounds like trivia until you need to rebuild a cluster in an afternoon or hand a team a bounded slice of the platform. Here is when the pattern earns its keep, and when ApplicationSet should replace it.

A vocabulary check with a trap inside it. Strict semantic versions bind libraries and SDKs; continuously deployed services play a different game, and pretending otherwise signals inexperience.

Long-lived branches pile up merge debt until integration becomes a gamble. There is a named technique that ships a three-month refactor in releasable increments, and its final step is deletion.

Queueing during release week is rarely bad luck. Diagnosis takes a minute once you know the three failure shapes, and the durable fix treats agents as cattle with labels and lifespans.

If every environment rebuilds, staging never validated the bytes production runs. The promotion model auditors and 2am responders both love, plus the costs nobody mentions until adoption.

The honest mechanics of merging to trunk many times a day: flags, fast CI, trunk locks, and the conditions under which you should not run it at all.
